Self cleaning ovens have caused many people headaches over the years because they are required to have a locking latch mechanism to protect homeowners from the high heat involved in the self-cleaning cycle. I am a firm believer that here in the USA our safety is over-regulated (but that's another story). Some of these latch/lock mechanisms fail when the oven goes into the self-cleaning cycle and then they refuse to unlock! Getting the oven door open then becomes quite a task... and a new latch mechanism must be installed. Self-cleaning ovens was an awesome idea but apparently we are too dumb to use such a feature without protection from the heat... Actually, at my house we never use this feature for fear of the latch.
