best way to get to the evaporator fan

Postby tonylombardi » Sat Mar 10, 2007 3:02 pm

What exactly is the best way to reach the evaporator fan? I have to replace the motor and the blade, and pulled the refrigerator out and there is no way to get there from the back. The only way is through the freezer door, which is very tight...Is there a better way?

Hi,

Yupper, only way is from the front. False wall on the inside back of the freezer is removed to access the fan motor.

Howling Noise fixed - Bad control board

Postby sticky » Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:07 am

My refrigerator is a GE Profile GSH25JFRFBB side-by-side unit. It's a little more than a year old.

There was a low pitched howling/humming noise coming from the freezer compartment. The noise cycled on and off every 15-45 minutes.
I called GE for info since this post states that certain models and SN's had a free replacement part for defective control boards. Unfortunately my SN didn't qualify since it was manufactured one month before the start date of the replacement program (April 2005). I was offered the replacment part for 50% off GE's price ($56) with free shipping. I accepted the offer it was delivered overnight FEDEX.

I installed the board and VOILA the noise was gone. Problem solved. My control board was defective and the new board had a new part number. Saved me big bucks doing it myself over sending a tech to my house to do it.

My GE side-by-side model PSI23SGRB started making the howling noise. I decided to call GE and see if it was covered. Of course it was not, but offer to send a tech and pay for the part but not the service call if it was the issue? The service call was $75. They also offered the part for $29 shipped, (part# WR55X10552) which I took them up on.

Hopefully it will solve the problem. THANKS for the info.

I have a GE side-by-side fridge (GSL25JFPJBS) with the same howling symptoms. The schematic shows the same controller(WR55X10552). Which GE number did you call to get special pricing on that part? I tried the regular warranty/service number and could never find a selection to speak with a human. Also, I'm concerned about reaching a department which is ignorant of the 'known problem' and wants to sell me the part at standard list price.

I just called GE Answer number 1.800.626.2005 and went through the menu to order a part. Sorry I just throw my notes away on this, this weekend.

I put my board in about 3 days ago and have not heard the noise again.

Was it hard to put in the board? Where did you find instructions?

hmmmm. Just talked with GE Consumer Relations. They'll discount the part to 60.10 + shipping, or I can pay a service call and the part's free.

I must have gotten a real nice agent. :D I'd try again and see if you get a different agent.
It was very easy, instructions came with the board. You basically unplug the board, remove it, install the new one and plug in the connectors, took no more then 15 minutes. You only need a socket to remove the panel on the back of the fridge.

I finally replaced the board (new part number WR55X10552) on my GSL25JFPHBS this week. Cost was $99.25 from my local supplier and 5 minutes to make the swap.

Going on three day with no howling... :)

This may be of interest...I have the same high pitched howling and got this from the appliance store. Includes models built from Dec 04 to Aug 06.
